Hello, Business Tribe.
It’s not every day that a person in your community sets a record and compassionately raises funds for a local charity.
On Saturday, August 18, 2018 it was our pleasure to be present at Point Pelee National Park to congratulate and welcome home Don Martel, photographer, and cyclist. Don arrived at ‘The Tip,’ the southern-most-point of mainland Canada and his final destination after his 7000 kms journey cycling across Canada for Alzheimer’s.
Don is the first cyclist to cross Canada from east – west and north -south, biking a total of 15,000 kms. He was inspired several years ago to accomplish his first ride after meeting two people while visiting at his cottage. Those same people then became his friends and the designers of the bike he was to ride on his cross-country journeys.
When Don began his 76-day journey on June 4, 2018 he had to face the challenges that came with an extreme sports adventure. He overcame outrageous weather conditions, avoided predatory animals, survived on a limited diet and triumphed over isolation and fatigue. He fearlessly powered on to set a record, shoot some of the best nature photography in Canada and raise funds to benefit those suffering from Alzheimer’s in Windsor-Essex, Ontario. He now lays claim to being, the first cyclist to ride the dangerous and desolate 800 kilometer Dempster Highway from Tucktoyatuk to Dempster, and has currently raised over $25,000 dollars for the Alzheimer Society of Windsor Essex County. Although donations are still being accepted.
Some dream, others talk, but Don did it! His outstanding accomplishment is inspirational.
Alzheimer’s, a fatal disease robbing people of their memories and the ability to take care of themselves, effects approximately 50 million people across the globe. This July 2018, Bill Gates and Leonard Lauder (formerly of Estee Lauder Cosmetics and founder of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation) will be joined by other philanthropists such as the Dolby Family and the Charles & Helen Schwab Foundation to fund the ADDF Diagnostics Accelerator. This multi-million-dollar venture will provide global funding for scientists and clinicians in academic settings, charities and biotech companies to research and develop an immediate commercial solution to the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.
Gates, confident in the progress being made in Alzheimer’s research, was quoted as saying that an early Alzheimer’s diagnosis may soon be “as simple as getting your blood tested during your annual physical.” What hopeful news.
As happy and healthy business professionals MMA Architect Inc. gladly supported and were inspired by Don’s ride. We also felt compelled to share Don Martel’s story on our business blog in hopes that others might be moved to contribute to programs for Alzheimer’s patients in Windsor-Essex. Please feel free to support #NtoSforALZ by sending your contribution to Alzheimer Society of Windsor Essex County, 2135 Richmond St, Windsor, ON N8Y 0A1, Phone: (519) 974-2220. Every little bit helps, but those contributing donations of $20.00 or more will receive a tax receipt.
In addition to the above campaign, an associate of ours, The Vourakes Family, has also created an olive oil in memory of their beloved father Peter Vourakes. 1 Vourakes Farms Olive Oil donates a dollar for every bottle sold to the Alzheimer’s Society.
