Hello, Business Tribe!
MMA Architect Inc. and Windsor Ontario Architect, Stuart Miller hope you enjoy our blog. We take a fresh approach to business blogging, highlighting a variety of topics.
I am really enjoying these exceptionally beautiful summer days, and I am trying to include exercise and an improved diet in my daily routine. Some days are better than others, and yesterday was a gem. My state of flow after taking a 23-kilometre ride, in PointPelee National Park, with a dear friend allowed me to come to an important realization.
After my bike ride, I was very, very hungry. Did I make good food choices while in that state? No. Why? Because I just wanted what I wanted, when I wanted it. Was this a productive mindset? No. Darn, another ‘change my diet day’ foiled again.
Why am I blogging about my summertime training and nutrition? Because, as business professionals, some of you might be facing a similar ‘food focus challenge.’ Is your diet one of the last things on your to-do list? Well, it has been on my list for quite some time. It’s time to make a change and each day I am attempting to unlock parts of my awareness that are blocking me from achieving this goal.
Business requires you to be on the go, stick to a plan and achieve results. We are often also required to wait for results to be revealed. Frankly, when I’m hungry or when it comes to food I do not want to wait. I simply become impatient and want instant gratification. This means I am not fully present with my food choices. I suddenly ditch the discipline and my course of action when it comes to food becomes impulsive and random. This behavior is inconsistent with the rest of my take on things and needs to be revamped.
After this personal revelation, I then proceeded with my day. My next stop, Birdie’s Perch for a healthy veggie burrito. That was a smart food choice, but I could have done without the can of grape soda and a soft serve ice cream cone. A couple of errands later while leaving the grocery store I met Erin Meloche, handing out snacks, Almond Energy Bites. I could use some energy, so I tried one and struck up a conversation with her to find out exactly why she was sharing bite-size treats at Zehrs Real Canadian Superstore.
Erin is a dietitian and consultant employed by Loblaws. She offers free (in-store) group workshops of varying themes including eating for heart health, eating well for diabetes, meal planning, weight management, and gluten-free foods. Her newest workshop this summer is entitled “Summer Salads and Dressings” running throughout the month of July. As a registered dietitian and expert in her field, she also offers one on one personal nutrition counselling. If you are interested in booking an individualized appointment with Erin Meloche visit, “bookadietitian.ca.” Wow Zehrs, good move offering the public exactly what they need and right in their own grocery store, impressive.
I then read this friendly young woman’s info, proceeded to like her Facebook page and entered the contest that she and Loblaws are holding to win a handy and healthy cookbook; Yum and Yummer by Greta Podleski (Draw to be held August 3rd).
It was a pleasure meeting Erin Meloche-Registered Dietitian and I look forward to learning more from this knowledgeable woman. If you are interested in entering Loblaw’s and Erin’s cookbook contest, 1) Like Erin Molcoche on Facebook, 2) Share a photo of a favourite fresh summer meal, and 3) Share the contest post on your Facebook page. Pretty simple. May you also enjoy the following recipe for the low calorie and delicious snack I tasted when I met Erin.
Enjoy this recipe for the “Yum and Yummer” (Greta Podleski)
Almond Butter Energy Bites!
2/3 cup quick cooking oats (not instant)
1/3 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
1/3 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 tbsp flax meal (ground flaxseed) or ground chia seeds
1 cup almond butter
¼ cup pure maple syrup and 1 tsp vanilla
In a small bowl, combine oats, coconut, chocolate chips and flax meal. Mix well and set aside.
In a separate bowl, mix almond butter, maple syrup and vanilla until smooth. Add oat mixture and stir again until all ingredients are well blended. Roll into bite-size portions. These snacks keep great in the fridge or freezer for a quick on-the-go snack, before exercise or a mid-game snack for your child’s sports team!
