The Rotary 4 Way Test:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to ALL concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and better friendships?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to ALL concerned?
Living our lives based on a few simple and straightforward principles, a mission statement, allows us to be fully present. It offers us a template for what we say and do, lifts-up those around us and enables us to affect our circles of concern and influence. Now that’s exciting!
Henry David Thoreau hit the nail on the head when he proclaimed that “I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.” The key words in Thoreau’s phrase are conscious endeavor and elevate. It is through using mission statements such as the Rotary 4 Way Test that we engage our conscious thinking and actions to elevate life.
Thoreau’s statement validates Rotarians’ application of the 4 Way Test as they move through their lives in a conscious manner, joining together within their communities to directly elevate the lives of others.
Rotary clubs across the globe hold a variety of events to raise funds to address concerns and improve situations in their own communities and internationally. These events would not be successful if it wasn’t for the generosity of businesses and individuals making donations to fund the clubs’ altruistic endeavors. But it would also not be possible without Rotary Club member’s hands-on work to accomplish fundraising efforts and projects.
Therefore, think about joining Rotary and bumping up your social conscious and engagement. First-hand experience with Rotary fundraisers and projects will leave you, as Thoreau said, encouraged by man’s (woman’s) ability to elevate his/her life by conscious endeavor. You’ll get a true sense of the phrase “it takes a village,” continuously have the Rotary 4 Way Test validated and the principles you value will directly empower the greater good.
