The event was held at the Kingsville Pavilion, with about 300 people in attendance. All present were treated to a delicious meal by Vernon’s Tap & Grill of Kingsville. The traditional haggis was served along with a roast beef dinner with neeps. Before dinner, the haggis was piped in by Peter Olsen and Burn’s famous “Address to a Haggis” was given by Kim Gilliland. Guests were entertained by a variety of performers: talented highland dancers from the Hawley School of Dance performed the highland fling, for video click, https://youtu.be/yYKRhTzcR9Y and other dances, toasts to the lassies and Lads were given and the bands Spencer for Hire and The Great Big Lake played live music to dance to till midnight.

Over the years Karen and Stuart Miller have attended numerous Robbie Burns Nights, but count this gathering as the most successful and festive celebration of Scotland’s National Poet. Burn’s birthday has been officially celebrated on January 25th since shortly after his death in 1796, so if you missed this #YQG #WindsorEssex event you still have a chance to toast ‘the bard’ with a wee dram of whiskey, one-eighth fluid ounce, this Thursday.

Stuart’s Scottish Heritage

Stuart Miller’s Grandmother, Mary Jamison Rowan Miller was a wonderful wee lassie from the west coast of Scotland. She was born and bred in Ayrshire County, the county of Robbie Burns, in the small coastal town of West Kilbride. She was a nanny for European families when she met Stuart’s Grandfather and then immigrated to Canada.in the early 1920s. Her husband Alex, a businessman who owned a paper processing factory, passed away at an early age, leaving Mary to bravely raise 3 sons on her own in Toronto, Ontario.

When Stuart graduated high school he spent a year touring the British Isles and Europe. Traveling to the west coast of Scotland he visited his Grandmother’s hometown and met local friends who fondly remembered her. He researched his family’s tartan and discovered it was the tartan of the MacPherson Clan.

It’s interesting to know that according to the 2011 Census of Canada, the number of Canadians claiming full or partial Scottish descent or heritage is 4,714,970, or 15.10% of the nation’s total population.
