Celebrate the Vernal Equinox/Spring!
The Vernal Equinox, Spring, will arrive today at 12:15 p.m., March 20, 2018. “Vernal” comes from the Latin word spring, while equinox means “equal night,” ‘equi’ meaning equal and ‘Nox’ meaning night. It is the time of the year when night and day are in perfect balance. There are 12 hours of night, and 12 hours of day. Then with each passing day that follows the light gets stronger.
On the Equinox the tilt of the Earth’s axis is perpendicular to the sun’s rays and the sun shines directly at the equator. This marks the beginning of a new season. It allows astronomers to measure the tropical year, the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun.
The vernal equinox marking the start of Spring has been celebrated in different ways throughout the world. It generally signifies the start of new beginnings, birth and fresh starts. In Japan, the ancestors are celebrated. In India, Spring marks the festival of Holi, also known as the festival of colours. In Iran, the vernal equinox is the new year. Many cultures across the globe celebrate the natural thawing of the ground and daylight hours increasing so seeds can be sown and crops can grow.
It’s said, that it is the only time of the year you can balance an egg vertically on a flat surface. This is a myth.
People are also seen flocking to sacred structures such as Stonehenge and the Pyramid at Chichen Itza to experience the mysteries of ancient civilizations.
