“The Luck of the Irish”

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches it strikes us to ask, how exactly did the Irish become known for being so darn lucky? Well, it wasn’t all leprechauns and pots of gold at the end of rainbows.

“During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth. . . .Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression ‘luck of the Irish.’ Of course, this phrase carried with it an unfortunate tone of derision, as if to say, only by sheer luck, as opposed to brains, could these fools succeed.” . ~Edward T. O’Donnell, an Associate Professor of History at Holy Cross College and author of 1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History

The Irish didn’t conjure up money, they worked hard for it, in some of the most gruelling work conditions imaginable and many even died. They built North America’s canals, roads and railways. They worked the mines, fished and Irish women worked in the New England mills.

There is no substitute for hard work, but you may want to review a few findings from research to give your A-game an extra boost.

Lucky Research

Dr. Richard Wiseman would disagree that the Irish hold the key to luck. “Wiseman, professor in public understanding of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire in the U.K., after a decade-long of exhaustive research involving thousands of experiments, found that “lucky” people, generate their own good fortune.”

The bottom line is that Wiseman’s studies found that you can maximize your good fortune by:

Learning to trust your intuition – lucky people respect their hunches, take leaps of faith and achieve conviction without certainty. They have a knack for sensing what is and what is not opportunity.

Trying something new – they are not creatures of routine and usually enjoy trying new things. Introducing variety into their lives allows them to drop into the gap and discover the unknown. They do not necessarily look at what others see, but instead serendipitously happen upon opportunity and answers.

Looking on the bright side and envisioning the unseen – Lucky people look on the bright side. They even see the positive in their own misfortune. They are also tuned into the unexpected. Rather than seeing what everyone is looking for they see what is hidden yet in plain sight.

There’s no need to give up your lucky charms. Instead,  just adopt a few new habits to find your pot of gold.
