Hello, Business Tribe!
Welcome to ‘Flick-Pick Weekend!’
Why ‘flick-pick weekend?’ It’s the weekend our firm picks our favourite films at the Windsor International Film Festival (WIFF). WIFF is an annual outstanding opportunity for wise and wonderful Windsor-Essex Folks and our Metro Detroit Border City Friends to immerse themselves in film. You won’t want to miss attending the screenings of some of the world’s hottest up and coming films. All interested in attending WIFF can take in 218 screenings of 143 films at 3 venues throughout the City of Windsor, Ontario for 7 days, beginning Monday, October 29th at 9:00 a.m. and ending Sunday, November 5th at 12:44 a.m.
Since we are architects, and our local architectural society supports and sponsors 4 movies in the festival, we happily pledge our yearly attendance at this event.

It should also be noted that both the Pentastar and the Kelly theatres are located in the Capitol Theatre.
Have we missed a ton of films we’d love to see? Sure, but here’s hoping we get another opportunity to see them over the course of 2019 at WIFF 365.
Picked for a Reason
New York is an international mecca, a city with a pension for pop culture, frequently fueling topics for cinema. Hence, three of our picks are New York centric: “Three Identical Strangers,” the winner of the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize Directed by Tim Wardle; “Always at the Carlyle,” a documentary directed by Matthew Miele about one of Manhattan’s historic and most exclusive hotels; and “Love Gilda” directed by Lisa Dapalito, about the comedian and actress Gilda Radner of Saturday Night Live (SNL) fame, a New York and worldwide weekend entertainment staple.
Our ‘archi-picks’ are “Always at the Carlyle” (see above) and “Big Time,” a documentary by Kasper Astrup on the world renown Danish architect, Bjarke Ingels. I’ve been following this film’s creation and awaiting its release. Since I have Danish heritage and I’m all about architecture this film is a must see. Do we follow his work? Yes. You’d be missing out by not acknowledging and studying Bigster’s contribution to world architecture.
For our feel good and art focused films we’ve picked, “Tenderness,” a touching Italian drama by Gianni Amelio; “Maria by Callas,” a documentary by Tom Volf on the life and work of the Greek-American opera singer; and our sleeper pick for 2018, “Puzzle,” an “endearing” story directed by Marc Turtletaub about a woman expanding her life through her relationship with a champion competitive puzzler.
Finally, no film festival list would be complete without a social justice element. In this genre we’ve chosen, “Pad Man,” a drama directed by R. Balki about an East Indian man and his attempt to help the woman of India and “RBG,” the documentary directed by Julie Cohen & Betsy West on the United States Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg. If you are one of the many online that has sent this 85- year-old power packed legal mind virtual vitamin posts to energize her and prayed for her longevity, this movie should be a on your flick-pick list.
Why You Need to Attend
Our list is a drop in the proverbial bucket considering the Windsor International Film Festival provides viewers 112 films to choose from, but here’s hoping we’ve given you an entry point for engaging in WIFF 2018: “Step Out of Your World” also found on Facebook.
The title of this year’s WIFF is beseeching you to engage, to “step out of your world,” and be inspired by the worlds of individuals across the globe whose lives have been immortalized on film and by the gifted artists who have taken the time to create cinematic works of art.
